About this page

Voiced and executive produced by Hollywood star Lucy Liu and directed by multi-award-winning filmmaker Eloise Singer, The Pirate Queen invites players to step into the boots of the infamous 19th-century pirate Cheng Shih.

Audiences are invited to immerse themselves in a thrilling adventure as they explore moonlit cabins, climb precarious rigging, tackle intricate puzzles, outsmart adversaries, and uncover the story of a forgotten legend. Celebrated for its cinematic narrative and historically accurate environments, the game has achieved critical acclaim, winning the Tribeca Storyscapes Award and the Raindance Discovery Award. It is now nominated for a prestigious Emmy Award.

"As a team, we were inspired by Cheng Shih's remarkable journey: she overcame adversity, defied gender norms, and ultimately rose to become one of the most formidable pirates in history," explains award-winning producer Eloise Singer, the project’s director, and Singer Studios’ CEO and Founder. "Bringing Cheng Shih's story to life has been hugely rewarding, and this is just the beginning. We’re so excited to be expanding the narrative, telling her incredible story across film, TV series, and a graphic novel.”

Critics have praised the experience and its creators, with Fandomwire noting, "It's clear that The Pirate Queen was not just a job to them but a way to inspire empowerment in others and promote women in a noticeably male-dominated industry."

The game's plot delves into the night Cheng Shih came to power, from her humble beginnings to taking command of the infamous Red Flag Fleet. Stunning visuals, atmospheric sound design, and a meticulously researched historical setting transport players to the heart of the South China Sea during the Qing dynasty.

Chinese-German writer Maja Bodenstein notes “The Pirate Queen is the first game I worked on, it was thoroughly rewarding to create something so tailored around the player experience. Having grown up in Hong Kong, it was a huge honour and joy to bring the surprisingly little-known story of Cheng Shih/Shek Yeung to life in such vivid detail. I'm so delighted with how far it's come, and so proud of the whole team!”

Alongside its multiple award wins, The Pirate Queen has garnered critical acclaim, with Fandomwire stating, "Singer Studios' debut title, The Pirate Queen, is the exact kind of immersive history that makes VR so special”, they highlight, "The director of The Pirate Queen and founder of the studio, Eloise Singer, is an award-winning filmmaker who does an exceptional job in her direction."

Over the last five years, Singer Studios has worked closely with academics, researchers, and sensitivity checkers to create historically accurate environments and a narrative inspired by real events. Lead writer and narrative designer, Maja Bodenstein, extensively researched Cheng Shih’s life to craft a narrative that is as authentic as possible. Driven to accurately portray 19th-century China, their research included a detailed study of British-China relations of the era, providing an immersive and educational experience.

This narrative adventure game is just the beginning of an expansive franchise for The Pirate Queen. Created by Singer Studios and executive produced by Lucy Liu and Eloise Singer, the franchise will extend into a film and TV series, as well as a visually stunning graphic novel.
